Wayground (formerly Quizizz) alternative

A free Quizizz and Wayground alternative for friends and study groups

The short answer

Letternerd is a free Quizizz alternative (Quizizz is now called Wayground) for quizzes outside a lesson: friends’ quiz nights, students revising together and quizzes made from your own notes. Everyone joins a room from their own phone with a code or link and plays as a guest. It has no teacher dashboard or class reports, so it does not replace Wayground for running a class.

Wayground (formerly Quizizz) Quiz and lesson platform for schools

What is Wayground (formerly Quizizz)?

Wayground is the name Quizizz took in June 2025, when it widened from a quiz tool into a learning platform for schools. Teachers find or make quizzes, lessons and other activities, run them live in class or assign them for students to do at their own pace, and see how each student did. Students join with a code. Existing Quizizz accounts, quizzes and links carried over to the new name.

Why people look for a Wayground (formerly Quizizz) alternative

  • You searched for Quizizz, landed on Wayground and want to know what else is out there.
  • You want to quiz your friends, not set work for a class.
  • You are a student who wants to quiz your study group without waiting for a teacher to set it up.
  • You want to turn your own notes into a quiz and play it with people revising the same thing.
  • You want games that are not only right or wrong: party games, word puzzles and personality quizzes.

Which should you pick?

Pick Wayground (formerly Quizizz) if

  • You are a teacher who needs classes, homework, student reports and links to your school’s systems.
  • You want a large library of ready-made activities organised around school subjects.
  • Your students are under 13.

Pick Letternerd if

  • You want a quiz night with friends who are on their own phones, in the same room or not.
  • You are revising with friends and want to compete on a quiz made from your own notes.
  • You want it free to play, with nothing to install and no account for anyone joining.

How to run a Quizizz-style quiz with friends

  1. Pick a quiz from all quizzes, or make your own by describing it in a sentence, such as “a quiz on the films we watched this year”.
  2. Choose to host a room. Pick live, with a countdown on each question, or over several days so people answer when they are free.
  3. Share the room code, link or QR code in your group chat. Friends join as guests from their own phones.
  4. Everyone answers on their own screen. Scores show as you go, and the winner at the end.

For a class-against-class feel, Team showdown splits the room into two sides that score together. For one-on-one rivalry, Head to Head pairs players off each round.

Revising with a study group instead of a class

If you used Quizizz to revise, the closest thing here is a revision set made from your own material. On Study you paste your notes or upload a file, and Letternerd builds a quiz from it, or you write the questions yourself. You go through it as flash cards on your own, then host it as a live quiz for friends revising the same topic.

  • Each person revises at their own pace. Nobody else sees your flash-card ratings.
  • In the live quiz everyone answers the same question at once, and the reason is shown after each answer.
  • Check questions made from notes against your course: they are only as accurate as the notes and the model that read them.

Frequently asked questions

Is Quizizz now called Wayground?

Yes. Quizizz renamed itself Wayground in June 2025. Accounts, quizzes and old links carried over. Letternerd is a separate product, made for quizzes and games with friends rather than for running a class.

Is there a free alternative to Quizizz for playing with friends?

Yes. Letternerd is free to play in the browser. Host a quiz, share the code or link, and friends join as guests from their own phones. You can pick a built-in quiz or make one about your group.

Can students play a Quizizz-style game without a teacher?

Yes. Anyone aged 13 or older can host a room on Letternerd, so a study group can run its own quiz, including one made from its notes. Nobody needs an account to join.

Does Letternerd have reports like Wayground?

No. There is no teacher dashboard, no class roster, no assignments and no student reports. The room sees the scores at the end, as in any game. If you need reports for a class, Wayground is built for that.
