Making your own game
If none of the built-in games fit, describe one in a sentence and Letternerd builds it, or turn a document or a link into a game. Keep it to yourself, share it with a link, or publish it so others can play and remix it.
Study groups
A game can also be a set of questions. Open Learn, make a set from your own notes or write the questions, and revise it as flash cards that come back on a spaced schedule, or host it as a live quiz for friends. The guide for students has the detail.
Public circles
Public circles are open groups anyone can join. Tap Play and you are at a table with whoever is around, or with AI players if nobody is. Each circle has a goal for the week, a board and a short chat. Everyone shows up by username, and the games are the ones we made for playing with strangers.
Who can see what
Other players in a room see your display name and what a round has made public. Hidden answers, secret roles and private choices stay hidden until the game reveals them. Read the privacy policy for the detail, and the community rules for how reports work.
Common questions
What is Letternerd?
Letternerd is a free platform for playing and making social games with words. You pick a game or describe your own, share a room code or link, and everyone plays in their own browser. There is nothing to download and you do not need an account.
What are circles?
A circle is a group that plays together. Make a private one for your friends with a code, or join a public one like Word Nerds or Football Heads: anyone can join, play with whoever is around and work towards a goal each week.
Is Letternerd free?
Playing is free, and so is entering a brand’s game or giveaway: nothing is ever bought to take part. Gold, the in-game currency, is earned by playing and cannot be bought. AI credits, used to make games with AI, come with an account and top up each month, and can also be bought.
Do I need to download an app or sign up?
No. Letternerd runs in the browser on phones, tablets and computers, and you play as a guest without an account. An account is optional, and is needed only to keep your history across devices.
How do I start a game?
Pick a game, choose to host a room, and share the room code, link or QR code. When everyone has joined, start the game.
How do I join a game?
Open the link you were sent, or go to letternerd.com/join and type the room code. You are seated as a guest, with no signup.
How many people can play?
From 1 to 20, depending on the game. Each game page shows its own range and how long a round takes.
Can we play live or over several days?
Both. When you host a room you choose live, with countdowns, or over days, where each person takes their turn when they are free. A game that cannot be played over days says why when you choose.
