Letternerd frequently asked questions

Short answers about how Letternerd works, what it costs and what happens to your data.

The basics

What is Letternerd?

Letternerd is a free platform for playing and making social games with words. You pick a game or describe your own, share a room code or link, and everyone plays in their own browser. There is nothing to download and you do not need an account.

What are circles?

A circle is a group that plays together. Make a private one for your friends with a code, or join a public one like Word Nerds or Football Heads: anyone can join, play with whoever is around and work towards a goal each week.

Is Letternerd free?

Playing is free, and so is entering a brand’s game or giveaway: nothing is ever bought to take part. Gold, the in-game currency, is earned by playing and cannot be bought. AI credits, used to make games with AI, come with an account and top up each month, and can also be bought.

Do I need to download an app or sign up?

No. Letternerd runs in the browser on phones, tablets and computers, and you play as a guest without an account. An account is optional, and is needed only to keep your history across devices.

How do I start a game?

Pick a game, choose to host a room, and share the room code, link or QR code. When everyone has joined, start the game.

How do I join a game?

Open the link you were sent, or go to letternerd.com/join and type the room code. You are seated as a guest, with no signup.

Playing

How many people can play?

From 1 to 20, depending on the game. Each game page shows its own range and how long a round takes.

Can we play live or over several days?

Both. When you host a room you choose live, with countdowns, or over days, where each person takes their turn when they are free. A game that cannot be played over days says why when you choose.

What kinds of games are there?

168 built-in games: party games, trivia and general-knowledge quizzes, personality quizzes, anonymous and secret-answer games, bluffing and mystery games, would you rather, word and writing games, Wordle-style puzzles, icebreakers, movie and football quizzes, and games for couples and long distance.

Can I play quizzes and games on my own?

Yes. Many games, including most quizzes, personality tests and word puzzles, work with one player. When you want company, host the same game as a room and play with friends.

Are there games for high school students?

Yes. Letternerd is for ages 13 and up. Teens use it for party games with friends, anonymous and secret-answer games, personality quizzes, trivia, word puzzles and for revising together. Everyone joins from their own phone with a room code, so it works at home, on a video call or on a break.

Are there anonymous games?

Yes. In Secret Drop everyone adds a secret and nobody knows whose is whose, and in Say It Plainly the table checks answers anonymously. In most group games answers stay hidden until the reveal, so nobody can copy.

Does Letternerd work in my country?

Yes. It runs in any web browser anywhere in the world, so friends in the US, India, Brazil, the UK, Canada, Australia, Nigeria and everywhere else can join the same room. The games are in English today. A few quizzes are regional, such as Nigerian ones, and the rest are global.

Can I play with AI players?

Yes. A host can add AI players to fill empty seats. Adding one costs the host some Gold.

What is the Daily?

The Daily is one question that changes each day. Everyone answers the same one, and you can see how others answered. It is not scored.

Making your own games

Can I make my own game?

Yes. Describe a game in a sentence and Letternerd builds it, or turn a document or link into a game. You can keep it private, share it with a link, or publish it so others can play and remix it.

Do I need to know how to code?

No. You describe the game in plain words and edit the result in the game editor.

Is it free to make a game?

Yes. Your first game from a description needs no account, and building one by hand in the editor is free. After that, building from a description uses AI credits, which come with a free account and top up each month.

Revising with friends

Can I use Letternerd to revise for an exam?

Yes. Make a set from your own notes or write your own questions, revise it as flash cards that come back on a spaced schedule, and host it as a live quiz for friends who are revising the same thing.

How do I turn my notes into a quiz?

Open Learn, choose to make a set from your notes, a file or a link, and Letternerd builds a quiz from what it reads. Or write the questions yourself, one per line with the answer after a dash, a bar or a tab. Either way you can host the set as a live quiz for friends.

Can my friends see how well I am doing?

Your flash-card ratings are yours alone, and your review streak is shown to friends only if you turn that on. In a live quiz the room sees the scores, as in any game.

How reliable are quizzes made from my notes?

They are only as good as the notes and the model reading them, so check them before you rely on them. Where a question has a reason attached, it is shown with the answer, which makes mistakes easier to spot.

Can we play a revision set as a live quiz?

Yes. Host the set from Learn and everyone plays the same questions at once, with the reason shown after each answer. It needs at least four questions with four different answers, because the wrong options are other questions’ answers.

Accounts, age and safety

What is a guest account?

An account we make for you the first time you play, with nothing to fill in. Just opening Letternerd does not create one. It keeps your name, Gold and history on that device. You can add an email or Google sign-in at any time to keep them across devices.

How old do you have to be to use Letternerd?

Letternerd is for people 13 and older.

How do I report a game, a player or a room?

Use Report in the app. A person reads every report, and Settings shows what became of the ones you sent. You can also block a player. The rules are on the community rules page.

Why would a game ask for my email or phone number?

Only a brand’s own game or giveaway does, and only inside that game, next to a box that starts unticked. You can skip it, or leave the box unticked, and you still finish and get your result; what you typed is then thrown away. If you tick it, the brand gets those details for what its wording says.

How do I take back details I gave to a brand?

Open My prizes and choose Withdraw my details next to the brand. They are removed from the brand’s list and downloads, and the brand is told so it can delete its copy. Deleting your account does the same for every brand.

How do I delete my account?

Open Settings and choose Delete account. You confirm with a code sent to your email, or by typing a word if you are a guest. The privacy policy lists what is deleted and what is kept.
