The short answer

Unjam in the Letternerd Arcade is a free game like Rush Hour, Unblock Me and parking jam puzzles: slide the blocks out of the way to free the red one, in as few moves as you can. Solve one and a harder jam follows. It runs in any browser, and the daily board lets you compare scores with friends.

Rush Hour Sliding-block traffic puzzle

What is Rush Hour?

Rush Hour is a sliding-block puzzle invented by Nob Yoshigahara and made by ThinkFun. Cars and trucks sit on a 6x6 grid, each able to move only forwards or backwards, and you shuffle them until the red car can drive out of the exit. Puzzle cards go from beginner to expert. The same idea lives on in phone games such as Kiragames’ Unblock Me, which uses wooden blocks instead of cars, and in many parking jam games.

Why people look for games like Rush Hour

How to play Unjam

  1. Open Unjam. Each block slides only along its own length, across or up and down.
  2. Slide blocks out of the way until the red one can reach the exit. A slide of any distance counts as one move.
  3. Each puzzle has a par: the fewest moves that can solve it. Hitting par scores the most.
  4. Solve one and the next, harder puzzle is dealt, until the three minutes are up.
