Games like Tetris

A word game like Tetris, free in your browser

The short answer

Word Stack in the Letternerd Arcade is a word game in the spirit of Tetris, though not a copy: single letter tiles drop into columns, not falling block shapes. Slide each tile left or right and drop it, and when a word lines up across a row it bursts and the tiles above fall. Fill a column to the top and the run ends. It is free in any browser.

Tetris Falling-block puzzle

What is Tetris?

Tetris is the falling-block puzzle created by Alexey Pajitnov in 1984. Shapes made of four squares fall into a well; you move and rotate them so they fit together, and every complete line clears. As the speed rises the stack climbs, and the game ends when the pieces reach the top. It has appeared on almost every console, computer and phone since.

How to play Word Stack

  1. Open Word Stack. One letter tile falls at a time, and the next one is shown.
  2. Slide the tile left or right and drop it into a column.
  3. When a word of three to seven letters runs along a row, it bursts and the tiles above fall. A fall can make a new word, which scores more.
  4. The run ends when a column fills to the top, or when the clock runs out.

If you want shapes, not letters

Letternerd has no falling-shape game. The nearest block puzzle is Tessel, where you place shapes on a grid to clear rows and columns. For catching falling letters, try Letterfall.
