Friends and group chats

WhatsApp group games to play with friends and family

The short answer

The best WhatsApp group games are ones people can join from the chat and answer whenever they are free. Riddles, quick quizzes and this or that work in the chat itself. For scored or anonymous games, drop a Letternerd room link in the group: everyone taps it, plays in their browser with nothing to install, and the room can run over several days.

Why group chats need different games

In many countries WhatsApp is where group chats live: the family group, the old school friends, the five-a-side team, the cousins spread across three time zones. That shapes which games work. Half the group has the chat muted. Someone is at work, someone is asleep, someone only checks in the evening. A game that needs everyone at once will die by lunchtime.

Good WhatsApp group games are quick to understand from one message, easy to join late and fine to answer hours after everyone else. Everything below is written with that in mind, and it works the same way in any other group chat app.

WhatsApp group games with answers you can play in the chat

Riddles

Post one riddle and let people reply with guesses. Give the answer in the evening. Here are some we wrote:

  1. I go up when the rain comes down, and spend sunny days folded in a corner. Answer: an umbrella.
  2. I am full of holes, yet I still hold the rice while you rinse it. Answer: a sieve.
  3. I wake everyone in the house, but I have never slept. Answer: an alarm clock.
  4. Everyone in this group has a pile of me, nobody reads me, and I am always over a hundred. Answer: unread messages.
  5. I am green at the market, yellow on the counter and brown by Friday. Answer: a banana.
  6. I get longer every time someone in this group says “quick question”. Answer: the chat.
  7. We go out as a pair, we come home as a pair, and one of us always vanishes in the wash. Answer: socks.

Ten-second quiz

Post one question a day. First right answer gets a point, and someone keeps a running score in the group description.

  1. How many minutes are there in a day? Answer: 1,440.
  2. What is the largest ocean on Earth? Answer: the Pacific.
  3. Which planet is closest to the sun? Answer: Mercury.
  4. What do you call a word that reads the same backwards, like “level”? Answer: a palindrome.
  5. How many sides does a hexagon have? Answer: six.
  6. Which gas do plants take in from the air to make food? Answer: carbon dioxide.

This or that by number

Post five pairs and ask everyone to reply with five numbers, 1 for the first option and 2 for the second: rice or bread, call or text, early or late, sweet or spicy, holiday at the beach or in the mountains. Then find out who matches whom.

Photo challenge

Name something to photograph today: something blue, the view from where you are, your lunch. Everyone posts one. For a scored version, Photo hunt has everyone find it, snap it, and the room votes for the best photo.

Chat games are fun, but someone has to keep score and every answer is out in the open. For anything with scoring, secret answers or votes, use a room link instead.

  1. Pick a game on Letternerd. Each game page shows how many players it is for.
  2. Host a room and choose over several days, so people can take their turn when they are free.
  3. Copy the room link and paste it in the group with one clear line, for example: “Game in the group this week. Tap the link, play on your phone, takes two minutes. Ends Sunday night.”
  4. People tap it and play in their browser. No download, no account, and it works on any phone.
  5. When the room finishes, post the winner in the group. That is usually what gets the next game going.

If your group likes it, make it a weekly thing. One person picks the game each week, in turn, and the winner picks next. A regular slot, like a new game every Monday, means people start checking the chat for it instead of muting it.

Games for a big family WhatsApp group

Family groups can be large, and a room holds up to twenty players at most, depending on the game. When there are more of you, share a solo quiz instead: everyone plays it on their own and posts their score. Try Quick fire: know-it-all?, Which Came First? or Could you pass a primary school exam?. A personality quiz like What’s your group chat role? is a good one to send too, because everyone wants to argue about their result.

For a Nigerian family or friends group, the Nigerian quizzes shelf has quizzes on slang, food, Nollywood and Afrobeats. See also our Nigerian party games guide.

Keeping it kind in a group chat

  • Let people opt in. Not everyone wants to play, and nobody should be chased.
  • Anonymous means anonymous. In a game like Secret drop, do not try to work out who wrote what afterwards.
  • Keep it in the group. Do not screenshot someone’s answer to another chat.
  • Know your group. Questions that land with old school friends may not suit the family chat with grandparents in it.
